I’ve often felt the same way in locker rooms as an openly gay man. At the health club in Detroit where I used to swim and run regularly, straight men who knew I was gay tended to act really weird around me in the locker room. (And this was not some conservative bastion. The men at my health club were mostly physicians and other highly educated academics.)

I usually kept my head down and got the hell out of that uncomfortable environment as fast as I could.

And that’s a shame.
