I’ve had some similar conversations lately with members of my extended Ohio rust-belt family. Things are mostly getting worse not better for people who used to thrive in an industrial sector that is dying or dead.
Aside from a few people who have become professionals and moved away, my family are mostly poorer now than they were two generations ago, and they’re beginning to realize it.
Some of them are disillusioned with Trump for the reasons you stated and because they no longer believe he and people like him have anything to offer them.
He talked big about bringing good paying jobs back, but he didn’t do anything to make that happen, and they’re not gullible.
That doesn’t meet they’re jumping with both feet onto a Democratic ship, but they’re open and listening.
