I've had kind of the opposite experience with female besties, a couple of whom even described themselves in a positive way as "fag hags."
My neighbor Blossom down the corridor in New York City, for example. She frequently said that she preferred her male friends to be gay. Although, she spent plenty of time chasing straight guys for romance.
We got together at least once a week for dinner and TV or a film or something. Sometimes she and one of her girl pals would join Lenny and me for a night out. We always had fun, and Blossom explained that she didn't think she would have as much fun with straight guy friends.
That sort of dynamic has been kind of typical in my experience, anyway, with exceptions ...
I have had sex with straight women, including one of my best friends when I was in my 20s. I was the only gay friend she had, and she wasn't interested in me because I was gay. Just to point out that she doesn't fit the description of a fag hag —quite the other way around, really.
We mutually agreed that the sex was so lackluster and passion free that we'd never try it again. We went back to being good friends who spent leisure time and traveled together for pleasure. Without any pressure for intimacy. Maybe that was the appeal for both of us.
