I’ve been writing about apathy and personal responsibility all week, Clay Rivers. Those are subjects that are much on my mind.
In a way, I’m less discouraged by the fascists and the bigots than I am by the “progressive” and “liberal” people who aren’t rising up in outraged protest.
Bigotry and Othering will probably never disappear from the human spirit. We’ll probably always have to do battle against our baser human instincts.
But at least we can DO battle. We can appeal to the better angels of our nature. We can TRY. Our biggest problem isn’t bigotry and Othering. It’s apathy.
Our biggest problem is that most people don’t give a shit about anything that doesn’t directly touch them or their families. We never should have reached the point where babies were being locked up in cages before most people started to care.
We should not be at the point now where celebrities on Fox News continue arguing IN FAVOR of inhumanity and barbarity toward children and refugees.
People should be shocked and outraged at that. They should be kicking people like that out of their restaurants and other businesses. They should be shaming and shunning. And yet, even some liberal commentators are arguing that we need to be “civil” and “respectful” to key members of the Trump Administration.
The hell we do!
All it takes for evil is prevail is that a few good people do nothing.
We need to be united in our outrage.
