I’ve actually researched the origin of the word a little bit, and linguists are pretty sure that the “burning faggot" explanation is folk etymology. But the actual origin is pretty homophobic anyway, equating gay people to old women who swept floors with brooms of bundled faggots.
Btw, I wrote about that suicide hotline thing, which is astounding evil.
