It’s worth noting that last Friday night during protests near Minneapolis, police rounded up journalists covering the protests, forced them onto the ground and onto their bellies, then photographed their faces and press credentials before letting them go.
What’s that all about? Police had already received a court order to leave journalists alone, not to interfere with their work. The order was necessary, because because state and local law enforcement had harassed and interfered with journalism in the past.
But rather than comply with the order, cops humiliated and debased journalists, in what reporter say was clearly retaliatory harassment.
Cops in the US are out of control. They are brutally abusing and murdering Black and Brown people, and they’re behaving literally like brown shirt Nazis in many other ways.
Forcing reporters onto their bellies? What the hell is that? I realize it isn’t as horrifying a shooting of 13-year-old boy through the heart after he raises his hands to surrender, but it says a lot about how vicious and horrible so many police officers in the United States are.
We need to work hard to bring them under control. We aren’t supposed to live in a police state, but tell that to many police.
A police state seems to be exactly what they want and what they are achieving.
