It’s so important that we transcend our capacity for hate and hurtfulness. But it seems like we always, always forget. I’m old enough to have had personal friends who lived through the 1930s in Germany and Austria. They watched otherwise good and decent people turn blind eyes to terrible evil.

It’s sobering to realize that doing that is an ordinary part of human nature.

We have to watch for it and be ready to stop it.
