It's really sad to see Target executives caving to loud bigots who have targeted Pride offerings that do no harm to anyone.
Target executives are teaching society that homophobia and bigotry are acceptable — just a different point of view that some people happen to hold.
Of course this idea is entirely contrary to their previous marketing messages about Pride, which conveyed quite the opposite message.
I can't say I'm shocked. I'm just filled with grief and depression.
Because this is a reflection of society. And right now, for queer people, significant parts of American society are filled with intense hatred toward us.
See Rand Bishop's article just this morning about a a homophobic hate fest that Netflix just released. I don't understand how Netflix executives can live with themselves.
Target executives are perhaps not quite as horrible. They aren't pushing anti-queer hate like Netflix; they're just caving to it.
But there's a lesson in that for all us queer people. Corporate Pride messaging is, ultimately, marketing, and is therefore never to be taken as truthful and sincere.
Marketing is always about selling products, not about human decency.
