It’s really hard to say. Raising awareness is tremendously important, and that’s one thing I’m trying to do right now. Expressing outrage is another. It’s really a shame that these kind of things don’t get mainstream press coverage. They ought to, because they matter deeply. Engaging with allies to spread the word about on-the-ground-oppression most people don’t know about is really important.

Prevailing public sentiment is strongly in support of LGBTQ equality, but a lot of people operate under the illusion that equality is already mostly won.

But tell that to the couple in Nebraska who had to spend thousands of dollars in legal fees on top of their already expensive adoption process.

One thing maybe everybody could do is subscribe to queer news aggregators like LGBTQ Nation and Pink News.

They do an excellent job of scouring local news sources for stories like this and getting them out to public attention. We can help them by letting our friends and neighbors know about the stories, by sharing them on Facebook, by tweeting them out, to posting them on Instagram.

We can talk to our friends and neighbors about the stories and educate them and help them understand what’s happening.
