It's not all of Michigan, to be fair. I've tried to be careful to specify western Michigan here, because the region is culturally distinct from other parts of the state. Our most populous areas are not like this, which is why we have a Democratic governor and a Democratic legislature. We're a big state with a lot of people, spread out over quite a large geographic area. We're not entirely unlike New York State, where an an extremely liberal majority is concentrated in a very small geographic area, with the rest of the state being less densely populated and quite conservative.
Things aren't that polarized here in Michigan, but they're close.
