It's interesting that you report that she's struggling more with identification than with belief. I wouldn't like the idea of identifying as a Christian for the same reasons you report, because I don't want to associate myself with a group of people connected to so much evil in the world.
But that's secondary, really, to me as an atheist. Even if I wanted to associate with Christianity, I could not, because I don't believe the supernatural claims they advance. I believe there's no objective basis for their beliefs in spirits and God and things like that. So, I could never be a Christian, even if I wanted to be a Christian.
