It's interesting that we rarely are never learn about these sorts of American heroes in school. The only name on this list that high school students would probably be familiar with is John Brown.

That's problematic, however, because of how Brown has traditionally been taught in school – as a crazed fanatic who caused problems for the Union.

I school, I didn't learn about John Brown the hero, I learned about John Brown the cult leader and villain.

Go figure, huh?
