It’s interesting that for centuries the Roman Catholic Church prohibited lending money at interest, because of passages in the Bible. Obviously, this would make capitalism literally impossible.

There’s some anti-Semitism tied up in there too, as Jews in Europe became bankers because they were religiously allowed to lend at interest, but then looked down on by Christians for doing it.

We hear echoes of this ancient anti-semitism in recurring conspiracy theories about Jews controlling the world through an international banking scheme.

But the real lesson is what you opened your piece with. The writing in the Bible is broad and highly generalized, produced over centuries by different writers from different cultures.

Anyone who really wants to can support their own worldview by selecting and interpreting quotes.
