It’s important to remember when reading the Old Testament that Judaism didn’t include a concept of the afterlife until all those books were done being penned.

The ancient Jews (like the ancient Greeks and Romans) didn’t believe as many people do today that bodies are “ensouled” and that the innate spirit of a person goes on existing after the body dies.

Even by the time of Jesus, those ideas were just barely developing. Reading the Bible without understanding this is bound to lead to certain problems with interpretation.
