It’s hard to understand how anyone took the story of God’s destruction of Sodom and turned it into a condemnation of same-sex relationships. That meaning isn’t in the text, and as you know, later Biblical commentators cited other, very different infractions, as the sins of Sodom.

It’s probably worth noting as well that centuries of Talmudic discourse among Jewish scholars never identified homosexuality as the sin of Sodom.

That association is quite the leap of imagination, and the fact that the word sodomy exists in the English language for homosexual acts is a testimony to the weirdness of language development and the pervasiveness of urban myth.
