It's hard to say. The Ohio Republican Party is under a tremendous amount of pressure right now – from their own extremist, right-wing rump. GOP voters in Ohio are clearly very tired of all the manufactured sort of social crusading the party has been focusing on. Political analysts say some signals make it somewhat clear that if the GOP keep it up, they might get trounced in November.

DeWine has always been a political realist, and I think he recognizes his party's existential problem. Hell, some of his statement might even be sincere. Hard to say.

But the thing to watch for will definitely be a legislative override of his veto. Republican lawmakers in Ohio have the numbers to do that if they want to.

So what happens with that in the next couple weeks is going to be really telling. If they let his veto stand, I think it will be fair to say that they're backing off. But if they override ...

Then it's going to be up to Ohio voters.
