It’s funny how much and how fast culture can change. My white American mother was born into just the kind of world you describe, saddled with the same expectations and virtual obligations. The shame she faced when she divorced after an entirely unsuitable marriage was intense.

My sister had more choices, married much later in life, and mostly made her own decisions.

American women in general today take choice in marriage for granted. But how quickly we have forgotten how new that is.

Here’s hoping that ALL women will soon enjoy the social freedom to pursue a fulfilling life … as they themselves define fulfillment.
