It’s an urban myth that some queer kids “identify as cats” and that schools let them use litterboxes if they do. There’s no truth to it, and it’s not even remotely believable, but such is the state of public discourse in Red State America right now.

The genesis probably lies in “furry” role-playing or cos-plahying culture, which is real, but which is not about humans identifying as animals, and is not a particularly queer phenomenon. Somehow, that got mixed up with conservative silliness that identifying with a gender is equivalent to (and invalid as) identifying with an inanimate object or an animal.

Somebody put the ideas together a year or so ago and invented the litter box story, which spread rapidly, as urban myths tend to do.
