It’s a real shame more people don’t remember this, or write about it. Didion was widely regarded in gay (LGBTQ) circles in the seventies and eighties as a toxic, conservative homophobic force.

She promoted the idea that gay men are inherently neurotic and at risk for suicide. Inherently. Not because of her society treats us but because of who we are on the inside.

She didn’t even try to hide that she believed that thoroughly debunked idea.

I feel a great deal of discouragement watching people praise her while ignoring her overt homophobia as if it doesn’t matter.
