It wasn't until I moved to northwest Detroit that I began to suspect that the narrative of the absent black dad was more myth than reality. People who live in Northwest don't call it the hood, they call it Northwest. Most other people call it the hood, though, and it's full of black dads taking care of their children.

That's my personal experience anyway, for whatever it's worth.
