It really surprises me that so many people don't understand that opposition to abortion in the United States only started very recently, that abortion is thoroughly grounded in our cultural history and practices. I'm surprised when Christians don't understand that opposition to abortion within Christianity is very new, the abortion was fairly common during the era when the New Testament was written, and nobody had a word to say about it. Nor did anyone in the early church.
I'm not surprised when I write about abortion and I invariably get comments (usually from men) implying that women can't control themselves sexually.
Think things are going to stop at abortion? In my state of Michigan this morning a politician is in the news campaigning on the notion that lawmakers now need to work to restrict access to contraception, because that will encourage people toward "chastity."
It boggles my mind how somebody like that can worry about how often other people have sex, can think that reducing the frequency with which people have sex is a good all on its own.
In the meantime ... I thought to treat myself to a package of bacon a few days ago, something that I haven't had in months for health reasons. I picked up a package at the grocery store then quickly dropped it in shocked like I'd touched a hot burner. After seeing the price.
Food prices and other prices are skyrocketing, and it's so comforting to see that our political leaders are worried about reducing the frequency with which people have sex. Because, you know, priorities.
Sigh.
