It might be hard for younger readers to appreciate the inspiration LGBTQ people once took from pop icons like George Michael who were obviously gay but not out as gay.
Today, that might sound like cowardice at least a certain lack of courage. In the 1980s and 90s, though, George Michael was at the cutting edge of daring openness.
Pretty much everyone understood he was gay, and that did not destroy his career. He gave us hope that societal attitudes would continue to thaw.
That thawing isn't complete yet, but George was a powerful force for good. May he rest in peace.
