Isn’t it or shouldn’t it be obvious that if we’re going to subvert and destroy gender norms that they won’t be, well … norms anymore?
That’s the point. That’s the end game. That’s what we’re working for.
When I write to object about a student in a Texas school being punished for wearing their hair long, putting on makeup, or wearing the “wrong” clothing, it doesn’t matter if the student is gay, bi, straight, cis, or trans. It matters that the school is enforcing gender presentation when Title IX forbids them from discriminating on the basis of sex.
It matters that the school is forcing students to comply with the gender binary.
I’m thrilled that some straight young people are all in with us queer folks who recognize enforced gender standards as straightjackets.
After all, how else are we going to get to the finish line?
