Isn’t a similar mechanism responsible for cats' amazing jumping abilities? I believe I’ve read that when they crouch down they compress their muscles like a spring, storing energy, then release it suddenly, letting go like opening a latch.

When I was a runner, there were a lot of theories about proper footwork harnessing stored energy in a sort of spring and latch mechanism as well.
