These so-called “Sunday Laws” also known as “Blue Laws”, were put in place to force businesses to be closed in observance of someone’s religious day of rest.

Interestingly, several of our founders explicitly opposed blue laws like this. And apparently, they did not become popular until many decades after the founding of the Republic.
