Interestingly, John Cormier, who is serializing in Prism & Pen his story of meth addiction and recovery, mentioned Grease last week in something of a similar context.

Before his addictions took over, he had a promising musical theater career as a working actor in New York City. He wrote last week about a summer stock director giving a cast a pep talk that included, "We are a company that will never do Grease."

The director didn't need to explain himself. The cast cheered, evidently understanding the director meant they would strive to be more relevant than popular.

I've never seen Grease all the way through either, oddly, though I do love some of the music.
