Interesting that regardless of creed, leaders of insular, charismatic religious communities can share many traits in common. Not all such leaders sexually abuse their followers, but sexual abuse is common.

Many remember Jim Jones of People's Temple for organizing mass suicide by poison-laced Kool Aid, but few recall how he had also organized his religious community into a harem for his sexual pleasure – young women and young men both.

Are abusive cults an inevitable side effect of religion? I don't know. But they are certainly evident side effects.
