Interesting! In the Catholic Church, the debates that are raging seem to have more to do with doctrine and theological tradition than with anything practical.
Many Catholic leaders are deeply invested in the Church’s positions on sex and sexual guilt. For them, the sexual revolution and the gay rights movement are signs of grave cultural depravity. The sexual abuse crisis is for them “proof” that the Church has been right all along. Their line is that even prospective priests become so infected by the depravity of contemporary culture that they are unable to resist the urge of sin.
More progressive theologians gingerly rebut the conservative positions, but the debates feel right out of the 50s.
