Interesting. As a kid I noticed the Evangelical fascination with John Wayne with a bit of puzzlement, given we really weren’t supposed to watch Hollywood movies.

For some reason the role Wayne played, the silent, super masculine type, was so important to some Evangelical leaders that they were willing to overlook their overall disdain of Hollywood and cinema in general.

When I say some Evangelical leaders, I include my father who did not allow us to go to the movies.

He sure did wait with great anticipation for John Wayne movies to come on TV, though.

I won’t even try to comment on that bit of hypocrisy. 😉
