I like to point out the contradiction by comparing media coverage of Mardi Gras in New Orleans. If you've ever been, you know that it's a veritable orgy in places. Mardi Gras is actually almost everything some media present as the Pride stereotype — except the New Orleans Mardi Gras revelers are (mostly) straight.

But do the media focus on the over-the-top parts of Mardi Gras? Hardly ever. You almost have to go to New Orleans and watch in person to understand what Mardi Gras is really like.
