Inerrancy is such a new concept, anyway. Those fundamentalist Protestants who argue for Genesis being literal history (to counter scientific discoveries about natural selection) are innovators.

Augustine of Hippo himself, one of the most important theologians in the early church, read the creation tale in Genesis as allegory. He was also apparently aware of (and untroubled by) narrative inconsistencies and contradictions in the gospels.

Given how much modern Christianity owes to Augustine, it seems like more people should be aware of this.
