Indeed, where I live in rural Michigan, this is not a theoretical problem. I was able to get vaccinated because I could drive the 40 miles to the nearest big town that had a pharmacy offering vaccines. But some people around here either don’t have reliable transportation or view an 80 mile round trip as a serious financial burden. If there’s any way for them to access community transport assistance, I haven’t seen it advertised and a Google search doesn’t turn anything up.
When the vaccine drive started, I imagined some sort of community campaign that would bring vaccines out to where people are, especially the most vulnerable people – something like what used to happen with polio vaccine drives at schools and churches.
I’m not seeing anything like that. There is some vaccine hesitancy up here, that’s for sure, but I think part of it might just be logistical. I think if people brought the vaccine closer to us, more of us would take it.
