Indeed! Sometimes I simplify that sentiment to this: "We don't reduce to the labels we choose to wear."

I think sometimes people get it backwards. They look for a label that perfectly describes them, and then they try to shoehorn themselves into whatever doesn't quite fit.

Like, "I found an identity label, so it must tell me who I am."

Instead of, "This label is a useful descriptor, but it isn't a perfect one."
