Indeed, police response and attitudes vary from place to place. I've written stories about police in some places who have fist bumped members of The Proud boys who were screaming at queer people just trying to get into a library.

It's never safe to assume that a cop is on your side. If you're queer, Black, etc, the odds are good that they are not on your side.
