Indeed. My latest story is about how the loudly Christian governor of Tennessee just turned down 10 million federal grant dollars the state could have used to test for and treat HIV.
The governor was peeved that Planned Parenthood would have received a small portion of the grant money to do HIV testing, and rather than allow that, he turned down the entire grant, even though his state has a very big HIV/AIDS problem, one of the biggest in the nation.
Is the governor a bit too grounded in a God of vengeance? Quite probably.
He declared a day of Christian fasting and prayer last autumn, and even then was called out by a coalition of progressive faith leaders because he won't take federal money for Medicaid expansion – which would provide quality health care to people in his state who can't afford it.
Think the Old Testament God of Vengeance is out of style with modern Christians?
Think again. Evangelicals and Pentacostals are often right on board, just like Tennessee's governor and his Evangelical supporters.
