Indeed, just follow the money. Who is pushing for relaxed child labor laws? Corporate Ag. They're spending vast sums of money to pass laws that let young teenagers work long, often dangerous hours in slaughterhouses and food-processing plants.
Why? Because they employ, often through supposedly independent staffing agencies, many migrant children. Officially, these billionaire-owned companies say they are opposed to child labor. Whenever a story pops up in the press about a 14 or 15-year-old brown migrant kid killed or maimed in one of their plants, they promise to get to the bottom of it and maybe even get rid of the contractors who hired the kids.
At the same time, they lobby state legislatures to make it easier to hire kids.
And then they try to make it sound like they're advocating for the right to work.
What they're really advocating for is to horribly mistreat already marginalized children.
