Indeed. I understand that Thailand (and to a lesser extent, other parts of Southeast Asia) is fairly accepting of trans people and gay people, but South Asia is quite a different story. The Hindu nationalist government that's in power in India right now, for example, is viciously anti-LGBTQ, and conservative, high-caste Hindus are well known for their hatred of gay and trans people.
