Indeed! I personally reject the very notion that religious affiliation is an identity. Religious belief is merely a choice, as evidenced by how people constantly speak of "searching" for a religion and constantly change religious affiliations as they consciously change their belief systems -- often many times in one lifetime!

Sexual orientation, gender, ethnicity, national origin, etc -- those are all innate human characteristics. People can't change their sexuality, gender, or where they were born. They can't change the color of their skin or (usually) learn to speak a new language without an accent.

But changing religious affiliation is trivial and remarkably common. Religion is not, therefore, deserving of being spoke of as an identity the way true marginalized identities are spoken of.

I wish we would stop elevating religious ideas to a place of privilege over other human ideas -- especially when certain religious ideas are clearly toxic nonsense.
