Indeed, I encountered this version in New York City in the 1990s, where my Jewish partner’s older friends and family were quite fond of it.

He and they pronounced it roosh, which I always found odd given their Polish/Yiddish roots. I would have expected a pronunciation more like roosse. There must be an interesting linguistics story in there somewhere.
