Indeed, Gilbert Baker didn't decide in a vacuum to use the rainbow in his Pride flag design. One of the reasons the flag was so instantly accepted and popular (in LGBTQ communities) is that people generally already understood that the rainbow stands for diversity. If I'm not mistaken, the popular PBS children's show Reading Rainbow predates the rainbow Pride flag. I can still hum the theme song, which makes the connection between diversity and the rainbow quite clear.
