Indeed. At least during my lifetime, social justice initiatives have mostly not had any significant Christian motivation. I think back to all the activists and advocates I worked with, including people working to empower the homeless, care for the sick and dying, help people fight addiction, escape domestic abuse, etc. I won't say none of those people were practicing Christians, but for sure most of them were not.

When I worked at an agency in NYC that provide a job training and placement for people living with HIV and AIDS, we did a LOT of intense human-to-human social justice work – helping fellow humans who needed help.

I remember a staff meeting one day in which our executive director wanted to know if it was okay to plan a retreat on a Sunday. Would that interfere with anyone's worship plans?

It turned out there wasn't a practicing Christian among us.
