Indeed, and while Eisenhower’s 1953 ban on gay people serving in the federal bureaucracy wasn’t much enforced after the 70s and 80s, the security clearance portion of it was often strictly enforced, all the way up until 1995 when Bill Clinton finally struck down Eisenhower’s Lavender Scare executive order. For four decades, LGBTQ people’s lives and careers were destroyed despite the fact that not one LGBTQ person with a security clearance was ever credibly accused of abusing their nation’s trust.
