Indeed, and we can look back to 2018 when FIFA broke its own rules to host the World Cup in Russia even though Russia had just passed homophobic legislation that violated FIFA equality mandates.

LGBTQ advocates all over the world protested vociferously and continually up to and throughout the World Cup, but FIFA categorically and without explanation refused to enforce the rules it wrote itself.

Famed British LGBTQ activist Peter Tatchell went to Moscow and protested both the law and the location of the games in Red Square. Russian authorities arrested him and roughed him up. FIFA’s response? They didn’t lodge one word of protest with the Russian authorities or take any action at all.

So why should football fans expect that FIFA will change now and actually care about LGBTQ people? FIFA has made abundantly clear that they are run by homophobic people who refuse to take action against homophobia.

I don’t see that changing anytime soon. The people who run FIFA are evil, and unless football fans around the world rise up and and demand new, moral leadership, the status quo is going to remain the homophobic status quo.
