Indeed. And in U.S. Evangelical churches one commonly hears sermons about how women are to be “subject to” their husbands. The message these days is often moderated with talk about not mistreating one’s wife, but it’s still an overtly and unapologetically sexist message. “Men and women are designed for different roles, and women need to stay in their lane.”

It’s not as bad as a total lack of civil rights, but it’s pretty bad. It’s interesting to observe historically how every move to advance women’s civil rights in the U.S. has been met with intense opposition from Evangelical and other conservative Christian quarters.
