Indeed, and I'm thinking about Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings." The film series takes significant liberties with Tolkien's novels, in some ways that make the storyline incompatible with Tolkien's universe and storytelling conceit.
Yet when fans of the novels (like me, lol) complain about some of the changes, film critics and movie lovers are fast to point out that adaptation is necessary for storytelling in film.
And they're right! A film is its own independent work of art.
