Indeed, and historians have long understood that Mycenaean and perhaps even Greek culture during the early Archaic period included rule or leadership by strong women, with men's military leadership limited by strong taboos from crossing over into more general leadership.

Mary Renault famously fictionalized this concept in her celebrated 1959 novel,"The King Must Die."

Renault was widely accepted as an expert on ancient Greek history, highly respected by classicists and other historians.

"The King Must Die" is not a work of history; it's a retelling of myth well grounded in history, written by a woman with a deep understanding of how patriarchy has distorted truth.

Well worth a read!
