In the oldest portions of the Old Testament, in Hebrew, which is a highly gender-inflected language, masculine and feminine gender markers are used for God all the time. Scholars say it's impossible to read the earliest passages of Genesis in Hebrew and conclude that the people who composed it conceptualized God as male.
