In France and Québec, the floor that leads to the street is called the rez de chaussée, which dictionaries translate as ground floor.

The floor above that is the premier étage, or first floor. And then second and so on, after the fashion of the silly Brits. ;-)

Though I rather imagine the French suppose the the Brits are copying them rather than the other way around.
