Yes, and the supportive experiences I was writing about were in gay bars in Iowa, so perhaps a similar phenomenon. Many years would pass before I joined/left the military and made my way to NYC, where things were quite a lot different. Though even there, diversity in gender expression seemed more tolerated among many gay men than today.
