In a similar vein to Eartha Kitt, Josephine Baker is an example of true cancellation of the powerless.
Despite a popular music career, she was forced to self exile to France because she insisted on being treated equally during a time when segregation was the norm.
Of course, she had the money and just enough accumulated power to do that. And good for her. She eventually became a revered cultural icon in France.
But when we speak of cancellation, perhaps we should remember all the people who have no power at all. Whose very lives are canceled by systemic injustice.
